We released an updated bike insurance tariff on July 31, 2024 with different terms & conditions. Below the conditions are stated depending on the date the policy was purchased.

To file a bike insurance claim, required documentation varies by the type of claim. Theft claims require a police report, proof of replacement bike purchase for older policies, and details about the theft. Damage claims involving third parties need a police report, repair or replacement invoices, photos, and accident descriptions. Damage without third party claims need photos, detailed damage descriptions, and repair invoices excluding inspection costs.

What documents are needed to claim bike theft on insurance?

For a bike theft claim, you need the following documents:

  • A police report listing all stolen items, including the bike's frame number and make/model.

  • For policies purchased before July 31, 2024, invoices and receipts for the replacement bike and bike lock.

  • A picture of the theft location.

  • A detailed description of the theft, including where and how the bike was locked, and timing details.

What documentation is required for damage claims caused by third parties, such as vandalism or accidents?

For damage due to third-party involvement, provide:

  • A police report listing the stolen items and bike details.

  • Proof from a store or repair shop if the bike is beyond repair.

  • Invoices and receipts for replacement bike or parts, with labor and parts costs separated.

  • A detailed description of the accident including time, place, and damage extent; a sketch can be helpful.

  • Photos showing all relevant damages.

  • For policies before July 31, 2024, invoices and receipts for the bike lock if vandalism occurred while locked.

What documents do I need to file a claim for damage without third-party involvement?

For damage without third-party involvement such as general wear and tear or solo accidents, provide:

  • Photos showing the damage.

  • A detailed description of the damage including which bike parts are affected and how the damage happened.

  • Invoices and receipts for replacement parts, separating repair parts and labor costs. Note that inspection costs are not covered.

Are there special documentation rules for policies purchased before July 31, 2024?

Certain documents are only required for policies purchased before July 31, 2024, including:

  • Invoice and receipt for the replacement bike for theft claims.

  • Invoice and receipt for the bike lock in theft and vandalism damage claims.

What details should be included in the description of the theft or accident? Descriptions should include:

  • Where the bike was locked and what it was attached to.

  • The date and time when the bike was parked and when the theft or damage was discovered.

  • For accidents, details about how the incident happened and the extent of damage.

What proof is needed if the bike is beyond repair due to a third-party accident? You must provide proof from a bike store or repair shop confirming that the bike is beyond repair.

How should invoices be presented for repair or replacement claims?

Invoices must separate the costs of parts and labor. Inspection costs are not reimbursed, only repair or replacement costs.

Policies purchased after July 31, 2024:

All bikes have a unique frame number, which is a mandatory piece of information required to be able to identify and prove ownership of your bike. Although not required during the initial sign up, we cannot properly insure your bike without it. If your bike is missing a frame number you can visit a local police station, an official retailer, or at the Allgemeine Deutsche Fahrrad Club e. V. (ADFC) to generate one.

The itemized invoice of the insured bike as well as any additional accessories needs to be uploaded to your account. Ideally the frame number will be listed on the invoice itself. If not, we recommend taking a photo of the frame number on the bike itself and uploading that.

Policies purchased prior to July 31, 2024:

Required Information:

All bikes have a unique frame number, which is a mandatory piece of information required to be able to identify and prove ownership of your bike. Although not required during the initial sign up, we cannot properly insure your bike without it. If your bike is missing a frame number you can visit a local police station, an official retailer, or at the Allgemeine Deutsche Fahrrad Club e. V. (ADFC) to generate one.

Providing proof of purchase and an invoice for the insured bike is also required when signing up. Your bike must have been purchased six months or less before the policy start date. Additionally, the bike must have been bought from an official retailer and be brand new at the time of purchase.

Recommended Information:

Though not required when signing up for bike insurance, we highly encourage submitting proof of the lock you use to secure your bike. An invoice and receipt for the lock is required if you ever need to make a theft claim, so uploading it with your policy ensures we have a digital copy on file in case needed. Please note the security requirements in place for bike locks.

Similarly, you need to provide invoices and receipts for additional parts or accessories you would like to have covered as part of the total insured sum. These extra parts (your lock included) will only be covered for repair or replacement if they have been added to your policy prior to the claim.
