Submitting a claim for theft requires securing your bike properly

We released an updated bike insurance tariff on July 31, 2024 with different terms & conditions. Below the conditions are stated depending on the date the policy was purchased.

For all bike policies (regardless of purchase date):

You must make sure that your bike is connected to an immovable object (bike rack, street light, metal railing, etc...). Locking your bike to itself does not satisfy this requirement.

If you are storing your bike in a common area inside your apartment building, then your bike is still required to be attached to an immovable object using a lock, even if the door to the common area locks. Storing your bike behind a locked door only satisfies the security requirement if no one else has access to that room.

If the insured bicycle is in a motor vehicle, the motor vehicle must be kept firmly locked or otherwise only entered by people authorized by the policyholder at all times.

If the insured bicycle is mounted on a bicycle carrier, the bicycle carrier must be secured with a lock to the vehicle. In addition, the bicycle must be firmly connected to the bicycle carrier itself with a separate lock that meets the security requirements listed above.

Bike policies purchased prior to July 31, 2024:

The lock itself has an additional requirement based on the actual purchase price (not the original value if purchased on sale) listed on the invoice/proof of purchase, and must have been purchased within the last two years:

  • Bikes that cost less than €1000: lock purchased for at least €29

  • Bikes that cost €1000 or more: lock purchased for at least €49

    • This is based off the actual purchase price displayed on the receipt, not the original value. If you bought a €30 lock on sale for €20, that would not satisfy the security requirement.

  • Alternatively, your coverage will also protect you if your lock is ADFC (German Cycling Association) or VdS (German institution responsible for safety and security certificates) attested

We recommend uploading the invoice/receipt of your lock as soon as you are able, so that it's readily available in case you have to file a claim for theft.
