You can add dependents to your expat health insurance by signing them up under separate policies that are managed within one account. Dependent policies can be basic or premium and do not need to match the main policy type. Pricing for dependents under 18 is €72/month for the basic plan and €96/month for the premium plan, the later being lower than adult premiums. You can cancel a dependent's policy at any time after the 1-month minimum, or request a transfer to a separate account through our support team. It's also possible to insure a minor without the parent or guardian holding their own policy.
Can I add dependents to my expat health insurance plan?
Yes, you can add dependents to your expat health insurance plan. Each dependent gets their own policy number and documents, but all dependent policies can be managed together from a single Feather account. You can manage each person's plan independently, you're not required to have the same start and end dates for everyone.
How do I add a dependent to my expat health insurance plan?
To add a dependent, follow these steps:
Sign up for expat health insurance for yourself first (or for the person who will be the main policyholder).
Once your own policy is active, log into your Feather account and open your policy.
Select "Add dependents" and complete the sign-up for your dependent, choosing either the basic or premium plan. Dependent policies can differ in type from the main policy.
Once the process is complete, you'll automatically receive each person's insurance documents under the Documents section of each policy. You can use those documents as proof of coverage and for any Visa appointment.
Can a minor be insured without the parent or guardian also having a policy?
Yes, it's possible to insure a minor (under 18 years old) under expat health insurance without the parent or guardian holding their own policy. There are 2 ways to set this up:
A minor can create their own account to sign up for a policy. During sign-up, the minor will be asked to provide the name, date of birth, and email address of a parent or guardian, who will be set as the billing contact.
A parent or guardian can create an account and sign up their minor child for expat health insurance without purchasing a policy for themselves. During sign-up, they will be asked to provide their own name and date of birth.
In both cases, the billing contact for the minor's policy must be the parent or guardian.
How does pricing differ for dependents under 18?
For dependents under 18 years old, the basic policy costs €72 per month, which is the same as for adults. The premium policy costs €96 per month for dependents under 18, which is less expensive than the adult premium policy.
How do I remove a dependent from my expat health insurance plan?
You can cancel a dependent's policy at any time after the 1-month minimum coverage period. Canceling one policy does not affect any other policies on your account, since each policy runs in parallel.
For instructions on how to cancel, see our article on how to cancel your expat health insurance.
Can a dependent move their policy to their own Feather account?
Yes, a dependent's policy can be transferred to a separate Feather account. Each policy can only be linked to one account at a time, but the transfer is possible through our support team. To start the process, the dependent will need to contact us and confirm how payments should be handled:
The original account holder continues paying for the dependent's policy, or
Payment details are updated so the dependent pays for their own policy.
Both options are available. Please reach out to us here for assistance if you need to move your dependent's policy to their own account.
Is there a discount for having multiple policies on one account?
No, we don't offer bundle discounts for purchasing multiple policies. Each policy is priced individually based on the policyholder's age group, and the number of policies on your account doesn't affect the price.
