Our long-term expat health insurance plans provide coverage for new medical conditions after policy start, suitable for those in Germany over 5 years or not eligible for public/private health insurance. Premiums vary by plan, age, and deductible. The policies allow month-to-month cancellation with proof of new coverage or departure. They meet most visa requirements except for long-term nursing care, which must be purchased separately. Switching to public or private health insurance is supported through our team.

What is our Long-term Expat health insurance policy?

We offer a Long-term Expat health insurance policy that bridges the gap between our basic expat health policy and full private health insurance. This policy provides extended health insurance coverage for expats who need coverage beyond five years in Germany or who do not yet qualify for public or full private health insurance. There are two plans available to fit different coverage needs and budgets.

Who is eligible for Long-term Expat health insurance plans and who are the Long-term Expat health plans recommended for?

  • Expats in Germany for more than five years who do not qualify for public or private health insurance.

  • Individuals applying for visa or residence permit renewals who cannot access public or private insurance.

  • Freelancers earning below the private insurance threshold and not eligible for the Künstler Sozialkasse (KSK).

  • Freelancers earning above the private insurance threshold with pre-existing conditions that prevent private insurance eligibility and who cannot join the KSK.

  • Those seeking more coverage than the basic expat health policy but cannot or do not want to enroll in public or private health insurance. Dependents of fully privately insured persons who cannot join due to pre-existing conditions.

What medical conditions and services are covered by the long-term expat health plans?

In general, all of the plans will cover medical care for new conditions, accidents and injuries that first commence after your coverage begins. There are also options to choose a plan with additional medical and non-medical extras to best suit you.

Please note: The coverage listed does not apply to pre-existing issues

You can find a more detailed overview of the coverage for our two Long-term Expat health plans in our coverage FAQ.

How can I cancel my long-term expat health insurance policy?

We offer a month to month cancellation of our long term expat health insurance policy. The provider only requires proof of new coverage or that you are leaving the country.

You can request the cancellation from your Feather account adding a copy of your new coverage or travel documents.

Right of withdrawal policy

You have 14 days from the start date of the insurance to cancel and obtain a refund of the premium paid when you signed up.

Switching to public or full private health

You can switch to public or private health from your long term expat health policy. In fact, you can even make the switch through Feather! Please reach out to our team when you are ready to switch over and we can assist you through the process.

Does this insurance fulfill visa or residence permit requirements?

This insurance fulfills the majority of requirements pertaining to residence permits or visa/permit renewals. However, this insurance does not include long term nursing care. Long term care insurance can be purchased separately, from a different provider, for full compliance.

If you require the insurance for an upcoming visa or permit renewal, please let us know and we can provide additional documentation for your visa appointment.

Please note: If you are applying for a visa renewal with this policy, we recommend choosing the lowest possible voluntary deductible when signing up, ideally not above €750.
