Individuals that stay in Germany for an extended period opf time must switch to German public or private health insurance. People employed by German companies with certain income levels, those over 75 years old, and others with specific conditions are not eligible for expat insurance. The insurance is designed for temporary use and not as a replacement for statutory or private health insurance for permanent residents.

Expat health insurance is available for individuals who have recently relocated to Germany and are seeking their first health insurance plan. It also covers German citizens who have never lived in Germany but stay temporarily.

How long can expat health insurance be used in Germany?

Expat health insurance Newcomer plans provide coverage in Germany for up to five years from arrival. After five years, residents must switch to full public or private German health insurance. Those ineligible for public or private coverage can enroll in one of our Extended plans for longer-term coverage.
