Expat health insurance plans are available to new arrivals in Germany, short-term or part-time residents, and German citizens temporarily staying in the country for the first time. Expat health plans provide coverage for up to 5 years, after which residents must switch to public or private German health insurance. Certain groups (including employees of German companies earning above a set threshold, those aged 75 or older, and residents who have been in the country for 5 years or more), are not eligible for expat health insurance.
The insurance is designed for temporary use and not as a replacement for statutory or private health insurance for permanent residents.
Who is eligible for expat health insurance in Germany?
Expat health insurance is available to individuals in the following situations:
You have recently relocated to Germany and need your first health coverage before becoming eligible for statutory insurance.
You previously lived in Germany, left the country, and have returned. The same eligibility rules apply as for new arrivals.
You are staying in Germany on a short-term or part-time basis as a visitor or temporary resident.
You are a German citizen who has never previously lived in Germany and is staying in the country temporarily.
Can I sign up for expat health insurance before arriving in Germany?
Yes, you can sign up for expat health insurance before arriving in Germany. In fact, it is recommended to arrange your health insurance in advance, as having valid health insurance is a legal requirement when living in Germany.
If you already know your arrival date, you can complete your application ahead of time and set your coverage to start on that date, as long as that date is in the future.
How long can expat health insurance be used in Germany?
Our short-term expat health insurance plans provide coverage in Germany for up to five years from arrival. After five years, residents must switch to full public or private German health insurance if eligible. Those ineligible for public or private coverage can enroll in one of our long-term plans for longer-term coverage.
Who is not eligible for expat health insurance in Germany?
Several groups are not eligible for expat health insurance Newcomer plans, including:
Person already living in Germany and have already started employment for a German company, earning more than €603 a month (this excludes freelancers and self-employed).
Individuals who have lived in Germany for more than five years.
Persons aged 75 years or older.
Applicants for secondary visas, visa renewals or visa and residence extensions.
Individuals requiring permanent or high levels of care.
Professional athletes.
Professional dancers
However, professional dancers may be eligible for coverage under the Long Term Expat Plan.
Is expat health insurance a substitute for public or private German health insurance?
Expat health insurance is not a substitute for German statutory or private health insurance. Individuals planning to make Germany their permanent residence should enroll in public or private health insurance as soon as they are eligible.
