In Germany, while it is generally recommended to sign up for public or full private health insurance, not everyone is necessarily eligible for these. This then poses the question, which insurance can I opt for?

Our short term or long term expat health insurances have been created to support those in need of insurance who do not qualify for statutory insurance.

Short term expat health is suitable for those new to Germany or with temporary status, while long term expat health covers those with longer stays or special conditions.

If you later become eligible for public or private insurance, we can help you switch without coverage gaps or overlaps.

When should I opt for short term expat health?

Short term expat health is a great option for those first entering Germany and getting settled.

This includes those who:

  • Are applying for their first visa

  • Have been in Germany under 5 years

  • Are unemployed, self employed, or students

When should I opt for long term expat health?

Long term expat health is a great option for those who may not be eligible for short term expat, public, or private health.

We recommend long term expat health for those who:

  • Have lived in Germany for more than 5 years but are not eligible for public or private health insurance.

  • Are applying for visa or residence permit renewals but do not qualify for public or private insurance.

  • Are freelancers earning under €36,000 per year and not eligible for the Künstlersozialkasse (KSK).

  • Are freelancers earning above €36,000 per year who have pre-existing conditions and cannot access private insurance or KSK.

  • Want more comprehensive coverage than typical expat plans but cannot enroll in public or private insurance.

  • Are dependents of individuals insured with full private health insurance but have pre-existing conditions preventing them from joining private insurance.

What if I do become eligible for public or private health?

If your eligibility status changes and you qualify for public or private health insurance, we can assist you in transitioning smoothly to your new policy. We ensure there are no coverage gaps or overlaps during the switch.
