In Germany, you're legally required to maintain continuous health insurance coverage. This means you can only cancel your expat policy once you have another plan in place β either public (through a Krankenkasse) or private. We have tools and support to help you find the right option.
β
Can I pause my policy?
Pausing coverage isn't an option. If you're leaving Germany temporarily, cancel your policy and purchase a new one when you return.
β
What are valid reasons to cancel?
You've obtained another health insurance policy in Germany
You're leaving Germany (temporarily or permanently)
You've been added as a dependent on a family member's policy
Your visa was rejected before you entered Germany
You're not entering Germany at all
What is the cancellation and billing policy?
You can cancel on a monthly basis. Coverage continues until the end of the cancellation month, and you won't be billed for the following month once cancellation is processed before the 1st.
Premiums are charged on the first day of each month after your first month of coverage.
If your policy start date is within 14 days of purchase, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal from the date of purchase β cancel within this window for a full refund (provided no claims have been made). If your start date is more than 14 days after purchase, you can cancel any time before the policy begins for a full refund. After either of these periods, a minimum of one month's premium applies.
How do I cancel my policy?
Log in to your Feather account using your registered email and one-time password.
Select your expat health insurance policy.
Click the cancel button and select the reason that applies to you.
Visa rejection or not entering Germany?
You'll need to provide proof (such as a visa rejection letter or geolocation screenshot) before the policy starts. Please reach out to us for help. If the policy has already started, a minimum one-month charge applies.
Switching to public or private health insurance?
If you've signed up to public or private health insurance with us, we will handle the cancellation of your expat policy and you may be eligible for a partial refund on your expat health insurance charges for that month. In most cases, this is processed automatically. For full details on refunds, see our Payments and billing FAQ.
