You can cancel your Long-term expat health insurance policy at any time. Within 14 days of your start date you can cancel for a full refund (the cooling-off period); after that, cancellation takes effect at the end of your current monthly billing cycle. Because health insurance is mandatory in Germany, we need proof of valid alternative coverage before we can cancel. If you're switching to public (GKV) or private health insurance (PKV), we can help you move over with no gap or overlap in cover.
Can I cancel my Long-term expat health policy within the first 14 days?
Yes. You can cancel your Long-term expat health insurance policy any time up to 14 days after your policy start date and receive a full refund. This is your cooling-off (right of withdrawal) period. Once it ends, a minimum one-month term applies. For example, if you buy a policy on January 1 with a start date of February 1, you can cancel any time until February 15 and get a full refund.
How does cancellation work after the cooling-off period?
Your Long-term expat health insurance policy has no time limit and is billed in monthly cycles, so you can cancel from one month to the next.
Each billing cycle starts on the same day of the month as your policy start date — your monthly anniversary — and runs until the day before your next anniversary. When you cancel after the 14-day cooling-off period, you stay covered and keep paying until the end of the cycle you're currently in, and then your coverage ends. You're never charged for a cycle after the one you cancel in.
For example, if your policy started on the 15th, each cycle runs from the 15th of one month to the 14th of the next. If you cancel on February 25, you're in the cycle that runs February 15 to March 14, so your coverage continues until March 14 — and you won't be charged for the cycle that would start on March 15.
How do I cancel my Long-term expat health policy?
You can cancel through your Feather account by following these steps:
Log in to your Feather account.
Open your Long-term expat health policy.
Upload the requested proof of alternative coverage.
Confirm the cancellation.
Once you've submitted it, we process your cancellation and you aren't charged at your next monthly anniversary.
Why do I need to upload proof before canceling?
Health insurance is legally required in Germany at all times. Before we can cancel your Long-term expat health policy, we need proof of valid alternative coverage so that you're never left without insurance.
Can I cancel if I want to switch to public or private health insurance?
Yes. If you're eligible for public health insurance (GKV) or private health insurance (PKV), we can help you switch and make sure there's no gap or overlap between the two policies. Our recommendation tool can help you check whether you're eligible. You can contact our support team for more assistance or additional resources.
