If you travel with your pet, it’s natural to wonder how insurance works outside Germany. Pet health insurance can still apply as long as certain conditions are met.

How does pet health insurance cover veterinary treatment received abroad?

Pet health insurance covers veterinary treatment for your pet in another country under the same conditions and limits as in Germany. This includes reimbursement for eligible treatments by licensed veterinarians based on what the treatment would have cost in Germany under the GOT.

How long does pet health insurance provide coverage during travel?

The insurance provides worldwide coverage for up to 12 months during one uninterrupted stay abroad. If you stay outside Germany longer than 12 months without returning, the coverage ends after this period.

What are the invoicing requirements for veterinary treatment received abroad?

To receive reimbursement for veterinary treatment, the invoice must:

  • Be itemized, listing each treatment and service separately.

  • Clearly include your pet's name or identification such as a chip number. If no chip number is available, other identifying details like breed or description should be included.

  • Individually name and price any medication provided.

  • Be accompanied by a translation if the invoice is not in German or English.

Are treatments by any veterinarian covered?

Treatments must be performed by a licensed veterinarian to be eligible for reimbursement.
