In Germany, veterinary treatment costs are standardized through the Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte (GOT), a legally regulated fee schedule that ensures transparent and consistent billing for veterinary services across the country. The GOT outlines the allowable charges for various procedures and treatments, with rates based on the complexity and time required for each service.

How does Feather pet health insurance reimburse GOT fees?

For treatments covered by your pet health insurance, costs are reimbursed up to 3 times the GOT fee rate. This cap allows for reimbursement on complex treatments while maintaining a standard limit. However, for emergency veterinary services, your pet health policy offers a higher reimbursement limit.

Emergency treatment coverage

If your pet requires emergency care outside of regular hours—such as at night, on weekends, or during public holidays—your insurance can cover the veterinarian’s fees up to 4 times the standard GOT rate. Additionally, the emergency service fee will be reimbursed, provided the emergency is confirmed by the veterinarian.

Why does the GOT matter for pet owners?

Understanding the GOT is important, as it directly impacts how much of your pet’s treatment costs will be covered. If you are planning a significant procedure, we recommend asking your vet for a cost estimate in advance to ensure you understand what portion may be reimbursed under the GOT limits in your policy.

What should be included in an invoice from a veterinarian?

After your appointment, please ensure that the following details are included in the invoice to avoid delays or denials in reimbursement:

  • Pet owner's name

  • Pet’s name and ID (chip/tattoo number)

  • Diagnosis

  • Date of treatment

  • Service item according to GOT

  • Medication used (individually named and priced)

If your pet had surgery or surgery-related treatment, please check that this is specified on the invoice as well.
