What happens when I visit the hospital?

When you visit a hospital, you may be asked what health insurance you have. As an expat health insurance customer, state that you have an incoming/private insurance, meaning you are a self paying or private patient.

In these cases, the hospital will sometimes then ask for a pre-payment up front that you will typically need to pay on the day of the visit. Oftentimes, you will receive a receipt of this prepayment, however, please note that this is not the final invoice and can not be accepted for the claims process. The hospital should send you a final bill after your visit, and this is what should be submitted for claims processing.

Why do I need to wait for the final invoice?

The reason is that the prepayment requested on the day of treatment is only a cost estimate, and the final amount might be different. In some cases, the final amount is actually less than the hospital has charged you, and you might be owed a refund.

This is why it is important to follow up with the hospital and obtain the final invoice to ensure you know the correct cost of the treatment.

For this reason, we require a final invoice with the exact breakdown of diagnosis and costs so that we can appropriately assess and process the claim.

What happens if I am admitted and have an inpatient hospital stay?

Typically, the final invoice and associated treatment documents (discharge notification and discharge report) are generated after the treatment is completed. This usually takes some time. We request that you await the final invoice and submit this for your claim once you receive it.

What about transport to and from the hospital?

Under your expat health insurance policy, transport to the hospital is covered if the visit to the hospital leads to an admission and inpatient stay in the hospital. You can submit the invoice for your transport through the claims link in your Feather account.

Please note, if transport to the hospital does not lead to an inpatient stay and you are treated as an outpatient, then this would not fall under the scope of expat health insurance coverage.
