What is a referral?
A referral is a document from your general practitioner (GP) that guides you to the right specialist for your care. Referrals help keep your insurance premiums lower by making sure treatments are necessary.
In Germany, the standard referral is called an “Überweisung”, like shown below. Formats may vary outside Germany.
Do I need one to see a specialist?
You can find out if you need a referral for specialist visits by checking your coverage details in the full coverage table in your account. If a referral is required, you need to get one from a GP before your appointment. Without one, you may only be reimbursed for part of the specialist’s fees.
A referral is valid for 6 months and can be reused for the same condition or follow-up visits. If it expires, you can simply ask your GP for a new one. No appointment is necessary.
Who can give a referral?
Family doctors (Hausärzte), gynecologists, pediatricians, ophthalmologists, and dentists.
