Private health insurance (PKV) in Germany covers outpatient treatment, inpatient and hospital care, prescription medications, dental treatment, preventive check-ups, remedies and therapies, and pregnancy care. The categories of care are the same across our plans; exact reimbursement percentages, annual limits, and deductibles depend on which plan you hold. Treatment that isn't medically necessary is excluded from every plan. Existing policyholders can see their own coverage details in their Feather account.
What does private health insurance cover in Germany?
Private health insurance (PKV) covers the core areas of medical care in Germany: outpatient treatment with general practitioners and specialists, inpatient treatment and hospital stays, prescription medications, dental treatment, preventive check-ups, remedies and therapies such as physiotherapy, and pregnancy and maternity care. The reimbursement percentage, annual limits, and deductible depend on which plan you hold.
Is dental care included in private health insurance?
Dental treatment is included as standard in all our private health insurance plans, covering general dental treatment, dentures, and often even orthodontics. Public health insurance (GKV) requires a separate add-on for broader dental coverage. Reimbursement percentages and annual maximum amounts for dental treatment vary by plan.
Are preventive check-ups and vaccinations covered?
Private health insurance plans generally cover the preventive check-ups recommended by the German government, with no age limits. This includes the statutory child screening schedule (U1 to U9, J1, and J2) and the vaccinations recommended by the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO). Some plans cover additional preventive examinations beyond the government-recommended list.
Does coverage differ between private health insurance plans?
The types of care covered stay consistent across our private health insurance plans. What changes between plans is the level of reimbursement, annual limits on certain treatments such as dental work, and the deductible you choose. Higher-tier plans generally offer higher reimbursement limits and lower or no deductibles.
What isn't covered by private health insurance?
Private health insurance doesn't cover treatment that isn't medically necessary, and this applies to every plan. Excluded treatments and products include:
cosmetic treatments
vitamins and dietary supplements
contraceptives
hair growth products
vaccinations outside the recommended list
Normally, neither private health insurance nor public health insurance covers prenatal yoga, doulas, or a birth preparation course for a partner.
How does private health insurance compare to public health insurance (GKV)?
Private health insurance generally offers broader coverage and more flexibility than public health insurance, though the exact benefits depend on the plan. The main differences between public and private health insurance covers this in more depth, including appointment speed, income protection, and how claims work.
