Medical checkups let us assess your health risks before a Private health insurance (PKV) policy starts, and they can allow us to waive waiting periods. Checkups are required for applicants with certain medical conditions, applicants over 55, and anyone who had only travel health insurance or no health insurance during the last 12 months. The usual set is a dental examination, a general practitioner checkup, and a blood test. We reimburse up to €195 per person, even if the application is not accepted.
When are medical checkups required to join Private health insurance?
Medical checkups let us assess your health risks before your Private health insurance (PKV) policy starts. A completed checkup can also allow us to waive waiting periods, which means your full coverage is available from the first day of the policy.
We ask for them in these cases:
You have certain medical conditions, such as a high body weight or a recent surgery.
You are over the age of 55 at the time of application.
You had only travel health insurance, or no health insurance anywhere in the world, at any point during the last 12 months.
What types of medical checkups are required?
We usually ask for 3 examinations:
A dental examination.
A general checkup with a general practitioner.
A blood test.
If your health conditions call for additional, condition-specific examinations, we tell you which ones are needed after we review your application.
Can I use results from a recent checkup I’ve already had?
Usually not. The examinations have to be recorded on the forms we send you, and your doctor completes them during the appointment. Results from a checkup you had before applying generally can’t be used, even if they’re recent, since they won’t be on the right forms.
How do I complete the medical checkups?
The process for a Private health insurance (PKV) application runs as follows:
Apply online. We process your application within 3 business days.
Check your email. If medical checkups are needed, we send you the instructions and the forms your doctor needs to complete. A task also appears in your Feather account.
Book your checkups. You can choose any doctor you prefer, including doctors outside Germany.
Upload the completed forms in the task in your Feather account.
Get reimbursed for the cost of the examinations.
How long do I have to complete the medical checkups?
There is no strict deadline, but the sooner you complete them, the sooner we can confirm your coverage. If more than 3 weeks pass between your application and the completed checkups, we need to check again that nothing has changed in your health since you applied, which adds time before your coverage can be confirmed.
How much is reimbursed for medical checkups?
We reimburse up to €195 per person for the required medical examinations, even if your Private health insurance (PKV) application is not accepted. This isn’t a claim on your policy, so you don’t submit it the way you would a medical bill. We send you the reimbursement instructions along with your application outcome, whether that’s an acceptance, a rejection, or a withdrawal.
What if I haven’t received my reimbursement?
The reimbursement instructions are sent with your application outcome, so if your application is still being processed, they haven’t been sent yet. If you’ve had your outcome and the instructions haven’t arrived, get in touch with our team.
What can I do if I need coverage before a visa appointment?
Medical checkups add time to the application process, so the start date of a Private health insurance (PKV) policy can fall after an upcoming appointment. You can contact our support team for more assistance or if you need urgent coverage for an upcoming visa appointment.
