What is an insured sum?

Your insured sum is the maximum amount your insurance policy will pay out in the event of a claim. For household contents insurance, this sum should reflect the total value of all your belongings, including your clothes, furniture, electronics, and even your pots and pans. Try to imagine if there was a fire (knock on wood) and all your belongings were gone, how much would it cost to replace them?

How is it calculated?

When you signup for Feather's household contents insurance, you'll get a recommended amount based on your address, and the size of your apartment. This sum is calculated at €650 per square metre and is the general amount that most insurance companies in Germany use as a basis.

You can then use the slider to increase or decrease your coverage according to the calculation of your belongings.

How do I calculate how much my belongings are worth?

To calculate how much your belongings are worth, you should make an inventory of all your possessions and using receipts wherever possible estimate the cost of replacing each item. It's a good idea to have this inventory saved somewhere and to always try to keep your receipts as reimbursements may not be possible for some things without them.

Try to be as accurate as possible to avoid being under or over-insured. If you underestimate the value of your belongings, you might not get enough compensation to replace everything.

On the other hand, if you're overinsured, you could end up paying higher monthly premiums than necessary.
