Medical Emergencies
Within Europe
If you are covered by German statutory health insurance, you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to receive care from public hospitals or doctors. Simply show your card and you should not need to pay upfront.
Outside of Europe
Visit a doctor or hospital as needed, but please note you will usually need to pay for treatment, medication, and services upfront. Make sure to collect and keep all receipts, medical reports, and prescriptions so you can submit a claim afterward.
If you cannot pay upfront or are admitted to hospital
If you require hospitalization or cannot cover the costs yourself, call the 24/7 emergency hotline immediately:
+49 40 5555-7877
The emergency team can help coordinate with the hospital and may arrange direct payment. The team will be able to attend to you in your mother tongue or in English. You can also pass this number to the hospital to arrange the direct payment.
