Filing a police report is an important step when making a claim for a burglary, robbery, or bike theft. However, receiving just a file number from the police will not satisfy the requirement for a claim. You will need the official police report (Bestätigung zur Erstattung einer Anzeige) to ensure your claim is processed quickly and efficiently.

When you report a crime, the police might only provide you with a file number instead of the complete document. However, this official report is required by your insurance provider to process your claim.

Sometimes, the police may suggest letting your insurer request the report on your behalf. While possible, this involves hiring a law firm to retrieve the investigation file—a process that can take 6 weeks to 6 months. Your claim will remain on hold until the report is obtained.

Therefore, we highly recommend that you obtain the report yourself to ensure your claim is processed as swiftly as possible.

To obtain a copy of the police report, contact the police station where you filed the report and let them know that you would like a full summary of the report, not just the file number. They should always be able to provide this.

Alternatively, if you submitted a police report in person, you can typically submit a follow-up report online to give any additional information. When you submit a follow-up report online, you will typically receive a full copy of the report as soon as you complete the submission.
