What does Breakdown Assistance (Schutzbrief)cover?
Breakdown assistance (Schutzbrief) covers you and your passengers, not only your car, when you're stranded after a breakdown, accident, or theft. It's included automatically with our partial or fully comprehensive policies. For the basic liability, you can ask to add it on.
Anywhere in Europe: roadside assistance (up to €250 including parts), towing to the nearest garage (up to €400), and recovery if you've gone off-road. Wrong fuel is covered up to €500 for draining and cleaning, and running out of charge counts as a breakdown for electric cars.
More than 50 km from home, if your car can't be made roadworthy the same day: travel costs to continue your journey or get home, up to 3 nights' accommodation or a rental car for up to 7 days, transport of your car home if repairs take more than 3 working days, storage for up to 2 weeks, replacement key shipping, and care for a pet that can't be looked after because of the incident.
Medical emergencies more than 50 km from home: medical repatriation, and extra return travel costs if a trip is cut short by serious illness or the death of a travel companion.
Outside Germany: express spare parts delivery, a higher rental car limit, customs and scrapping assistance, help replacing lost travel documents, emergency funds if you lose access to money, and legal assistance if you're arrested or threatened with arrest while driving.
Schutzbrief doesn't cover the cost of repairs, which Kasko covers, or damage you cause intentionally.
How does No-claims Protection (Rabattschutz) work, and who can add it?
No-claims protection (Rabattschutz) protects your SF class from a downgrade after an at-fault claim. With this, 1 at-fault claim per policy year is treated as if it never happened, and your class still improves the next year as normal. A second at-fault claim in the same policy year still triggers a downgrade.
You can add the no-claims protection once you're at SF class 3 or higher. If you later switch insurers, your new insurer receives your SF class as it would have been without the add-on, so the claims it shielded appear in your history.
What does Premium Driving Abroad protection (Auslandsschutz) add to my existing cover?
Premium driving abroad protection (Auslandsschutz) doesn't let you drive abroad, because your standard policy already covers driving throughout Europe.
What it does is add help after an accident abroad that wasn't your fault: you claim through us instead of a foreign insurer, we deal with the foreign insurer, and we compensate you under German standards up to your policy's liability limit. It covers the EU, the UK, Gibraltar, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. If you caused the accident, Partial Comprehensive applies instead.
What does Driver Protection (Fahrerschutz) cover?
Fahrerschutz covers your own injuries as the driver, not injuries or damage you cause to other people. Standard liability insurance protects other people, but German law doesn't give you an automatic right to compensation for your own injuries if you caused or contributed to the accident. Fahrerschutz covers lost income, pain and suffering, costs of disability adaptations, and support for dependants in the event of death. It's a secondary cover, so we only step in if you can't successfully claim from another party, such as another driver's insurer or your employer. It doesn't apply to injuries when getting in or out of the car, during loading or unloading, or at motorsport events.
What does Legal Protection (Verkehrsrechtsschutz) cover?
Legal Protection (Verkehrsrechtsschutz) covers legal costs from disputes about driving and vehicle ownership, including lawyer fees, court costs, expert witnesses, and the other party's legal costs where applicable.
This includes claiming compensation after an accident, disputes over a repair or vehicle purchase, defending against a traffic offense, and license-related administrative proceedings.
Cover applies across Europe and several nearby regions, and worldwide for traffic matters except in your own country of citizenship or residency. A waiting period applies before cover starts for a new dispute, and simple parking violations aren't covered.
