How can I transfer my foreign claims history to my car insurance in Germany?

Learn which countries' no-claims history we accept, which documents prove it, why bonus-malus scores don't convert directly to an SF class, and how policy gaps and other vehicle types affect your claim-free years.

Can I bring my no-claims history from another country?

You can bring your no-claims history to us from car insurance held in the EU, the UK (including Northern Ireland and Gibraltar), Switzerland, Ukraine, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We can't accept claims history from countries that don't use a comparable no-claims system or provide documentation we can verify, including the US, Canada, the UAE, South Africa, and South Korea.

What document do I need to prove my claims history?

To prove your claims history, we need a Claims History Statement (CHS) for EU insurers, the standardized document in use since July 2025 that your previous insurer completes for you.

For accepted non-EU countries, we accept an equivalent certificate from your previous insurer. The document must show your name, the contract's start and end dates, and your full claims history during that period. We can't accept other documents, such as an Italian attestato di rischio, a UK “Proof of No Claims Bonus" letter, or a broker summary, because they don't contain all this information.

Why doesn't my bonus-malus score transfer directly?

Your bonus-malus score doesn't transfer directly because car insurance systems are specific to each country and insurer, and each one calculates risk differently. We calculate your SF class from the number of claim-free years documented in your certificate, not from the score or class your previous insurer used. A French bonus-malus of 0.60, an Italian CU class, or UK no-claims discount years can't be converted into an equivalent SF class. This is why some customers expect SF10 or higher and are assigned a lower class, such as SF4.

Why does my previous policy need an end date?

Your previous policy needs an end date so we can calculate your claim-free period accurately. We can't confirm your no-claims history until your documentation shows a definite end date for your prior coverage. The most common problems are a certificate with no end date and a previous policy that's still running past your German policy's start date.

Can I combine multiple policies, and does a break from driving affect my claims history?

You can combine claim-free periods from more than 1 policy, and the length of any gap between them decides whether earlier history still counts.

  • Periods that overlap can't be added together.

  • Gaps of under 6 months between policies are usually accepted.

  • If the gap is longer than 10 years, your earlier claims history can't be considered.

Does claims history from a motorcycle, company car, or named driver count?

Claims history from a motorcycle, a company car, or as a named driver on someone else's policy doesn't count toward your claims history with us. Only the person who held the policy builds up no-claims history on it.

How long does the SF class review take, and can my price change afterward?

Our review of your SF class usually takes from a few days to a few weeks. Your price can change afterward: if the SF class confirmed by your previous insurer differs from the one you gave when signing up, we adjust your SF class and your premium. ****
