This article explains how we handle the transition from our Short-term Expat plan to our Long-term plan. It covers who can switch, how we coordinate the change in coverage, and what rules apply after the new plan starts.
How do I switch from our Short-term Expat plan to our Long-term plan?
You can switch from our Short-term Expat plan to our Long-term if your Short-term Expat coverage is ending, no longer meets your needs, and you are still not eligible for statutory health insurance.
To switch plans:
Purchase the new Long-term plan with your preferred start date.
Complete the application for the new plan.
We coordinate the activation of the new plan and the cancellation of the Short-term Expat plan.
We arrange the transition so there is no gap in coverage and no overlap between the old plan and the new plan.
Does the initial waiting period apply when I switch from our Short-term Expat plan?
No. The initial 31-day waiting period does not apply when you switch from our Short-term Expat plan to our Long-term plan.
However, waiting periods for some additional benefits under the new plan still apply.
Can I change to public health insurance later after switching to our Long-term Expat plan?
Yes. Our Long-term Expat plan is not a fully comprehensive private health insurance plan, so you can still move to public health insurance later if you become eligible.
What happens to medical conditions that started during my Short-term Expat coverage?
Any medical condition that started after the beginning of your Short-term Expat coverage is treated as a pre-existing condition under the new Long-term plan.
This means the new plan does not cover that condition.
How do we prevent gaps or overlaps when I change expat plans?
We coordinate the end of the Short-term Expat plan and the start of the new Long-term plan for you.
This helps make sure:
Your previous coverage does not remain active longer than needed.
Your new coverage starts at the correct time.
There is no uninsured period between the two plans.
