What does the bike insurance cover (and what's not included)?

This article will explain what is covered under the policy as well as some common exclusions.

Bike insurance covers you for a range of insured events, for example, theft, damage, and wear and tear. Below you will find more details about what is and is not included in the scope of coverage.

We released an updated version of our bike insurance policy on July 31, 2024, which includes new terms and conditions. Below, you’ll find the applicable conditions based on the date your policy was purchased.

What’s covered

If you purchased your policy after July 31, 2024

Theft

  • Theft or robbery of your bike or e-bike

  • Permanently attached parts (like the saddle, battery, or odometer)

  • Loose accessories (helmets, bags, trailers), but only if they’re:

    • Stolen together with the bike, or

    • In use at the time of theft

  • Accessory limits per claim:

    • €300 per item

    • €600 for trailers

    • €1,000 total

Damage

  • Accidents, crashes, or falls

  • Vandalism

  • Fire, lightning, or explosions

  • Natural events (e.g., storm, hail, snow pressure, flood, landslide, volcanic eruption)

  • Moisture or electrical issues (motor, battery, or control unit)

  • Short circuits, cable breaks, animal bites

  • Handling or user errors

  • Material or design defects (after the 24-month warranty)

Wear and tear

  • Battery coverage:

    • Below 65% capacity in the first 3 years

    • Below 50% between years 3–5

  • Other parts:

    • Wear-related repairs for up to 5 years after the bike’s original purchase

What’s not covered

  • Bikes over 5 years old at time of sign-up

  • Rust, oxidation, or surface-level wear

  • Cosmetic-only damage

  • Routine servicing, inspection fees, or poor maintenance

  • Damage from racing or downhill use

  • Damage from improper repairs or modifications

  • Manufacturer faults or recalls

  • Bikes that were already damaged when the policy began

  • Bikes that require license plates or mandatory insurance


If you purchased your policy before July 31, 2024

What’s covered

You chose either the Basic or Comfort plan;

Basic plan

  • Theft, burglary, or robbery

  • Theft from a vehicle or bike rack

  • Loosely attached accessories (if stolen with the bike)

  • Replacement of permanently attached parts

Comfort Plan includes everything in Basic, plus:

Damage

  • Accidents, crashes, vandalism

  • Fire, lightning, or explosions

  • Storms, hail, floods, avalanches, or landslides

  • Handling or operating errors

  • Production or design defects (after the 24-month warranty)

Wear and tear

  • Battery capacity under 65% (first 3 years) or 50% (years 3–5)

  • Wear-related repairs for up to 5 years after the original purchase

What’s not covered

  • Second-hand bikes

  • Bikes not bought from an official dealer

  • Bikes with auxiliary motors (drive assistance)

  • Bikes purchased more than 6 months before the insurance start date

  • Carbon bikes, fully-covered bikes, velomobiles, or dirt bikes

  • Self-built or modified bikes (if converted parts exceed 20% of the bike’s value)

  • Commercially used bikes (e.g., rentals, delivery)

  • Bikes worth more than €10,000

  • Bikes already damaged before the policy started

  • Bikes requiring registration or mandatory insurance

  • Bikes purchased from private individuals
