To file a theft claim under bike insurance, the bike must be securely locked to an immovable object, and specific lock standards apply depending on the policy purchase date. Bikes in motor vehicles or on carriers must also be properly secured. For policies before July 31, 2024, lock purchasing price or certification standards must be met.

What general lock and security requirements must be met to file a bike theft insurance claim?

Your insured bike must always be locked to an immovable object such as a bike rack, street light, or metal railing. Locking the bike to itself does not meet this requirement. If the bike is stored in a common area inside an apartment building, it must be locked to an immovable object even if the common area door is locked, unless nobody else has access to the room.

When the bike is inside a motor vehicle, the vehicle must remain locked or only accessible to authorized people. If the bike is on a bicycle carrier, the carrier must be locked to the vehicle, and the bike must be separately locked to the carrier with a lock that meets the required security standards.

What additional lock requirements apply to bike insurance policies purchased before July 31, 2024?

For policies purchased before July 31, 2024, your lock must meet an additional standard based on the bike's purchase price (not the original value) shown on the invoice or receipt, and the lock must have been purchased within the last two years:

  • For bikes costing less than €1000, the lock must have been purchased for at least €29.

  • For bikes costing €1000 or more, the lock must have been purchased for at least €49.

If you bought a lock on sale for less than these amounts, it does not meet the requirement. Alternatively, locks certified by the German Cycling Association (ADFC) or the German safety certification institution (VdS) are accepted.

Should I keep proof of purchase for my lock?

Yes, we recommend keeping and uploading the invoice or receipt for your lock so it can be provided when filing a theft claim as the provider will request it.
