Is private health insurance the right option?

Let's get into the nitty gritty of German insurance regulations! Two factors determine what type of health insurance your baby should get: the income of you and your spouse, and both of your health insurances.

The rules don't apply if only one spouse is the biological parent, and the other spouse has not adopted the child.

How much does private health insurance cost?

Simply reach out before your little one is due. Within a day, you'll get the coverage details and quotes starting at €160 per month. If you are employed, your employer will pay up to 50%.

How do I cover my baby?

  • Submit the application: You'll need their post-natal medical report, and the check-up reports ("U-Untersuchungen").

  • Confirm the application with your signature: you'll receive an invite to do so within 3 days of applying. If more information is needed, you will automatically receive a message.

  • Get the confirmation via email: the coverage is usually confirmed within 5 business days. All confirmation documents will be uploaded to your account automatically.

When does the coverage start?

You can get coverage for your newborn from the day they're born, as long as you meet the Type I requirements. If you miss the 2-month window after birth, the coverage can still be backdated for up to 2 months.

As it may take a few days to get your baby covered, we recommend paying the bills out-of-pocket first. Once your baby's coverage is confirmed, simply submit all bills through your account. You will be reimbursed within 1-3 weeks.

If your baby has health issues at birth, they will be covered in any case if they meet the Type I requirements. Otherwise, risk surcharges may apply. In that case, we'll check all possible alternatives for you.
