What is covered under public and private health insurance during pregnancy?

Have you ever wondered what coverage you'd get under public and private health insurance? Check out our comparison below!

Coverage during pregnancy

Both public and private health insurance cover:

  • 3 ultrasound examinations

  • Examination of the blood sugar, urine, and bacteria

  • Blood test (to check the blood group & exclude infections like rubella, syphilis, and HIV)

  • Detection of high-risk pregnancies (through cardiotocographic examinations or amniocentesis)

  • Sonographic examinations

  • 14 hours of birth preparation courses à 60 minutes by a midwife for the mother. The partner is not covered!

    With private health insurance, you'll find the individual prices per session in your coverage overview. The limits for birth preparation below apply.​

  • Further treatments, if prescribed by a doctor

Coverage during birth

Both public and private health insurance cover:

  • Maternity care

  • Obstetric care (help during birth)

  • Visits of a midwife during home births

  • All costs related to the delivery at the hospital

  • Birth at a birth center run by midwives

Public health insurance covers:

  • Multi-bed rooms at the hospital

Private health insurance covers:

  • Multi-bed room for standard coverage

  • One-bed room for premium coverage

Coverage after birth

Both public and private health insurance cover:

  • 20 visits from a midwife in the 10 days after birth

  • 16 additional visits from a midwife until 12 weeks after birth

  • Additional midwife visits for premature babies, or if it is otherwise medically required

  • Additional visits from a midwife, if you have trouble breastfeeding

  • Follow-up examinations by your gynecologist

  • 10 hours of postnatal gymnastics with a physiotherapist or midwife within 9 months after birth

    Under private health insurance, the limits for birth preparation below apply.


What is not covered?

Both public and private health insurance do not cover:

  • Prenatal yoga

  • Doulas

  • Additional ultrasound during pregnancy and optional blood tests.

  • Dietary supplements (like folic acid and vitamins)

  • Examinations beyond regular check-ups. You will be covered if there are any anomalies during your pregnancy.

  • Birth preparation course for the partner

  • Hospital stay of the partner during birth

Some public health providers may not cover pregnancy gymnastics (fully).

Depending on the private health plan you have chosen, the coverage may be capped.

Why you shouldn't upgrade your private health plan during pregnancy

While the more comprehensive plan may seem appealing, the additional benefits will not apply during your ongoing pregnancy. We don't want you to pay the higher cost without receiving the full benefits, so we recommend holding off on any upgrades until after your pregnancy.
