Expat health insurance does include some cover for pregnancy care, in particular for our premium expat health policy.
I'm planning on getting pregnant, what's covered?
Let's provide you with an overview below of what is included in our plans:
Cover | Basic expat plan | Premium expat plan |
Visits to the doctor or hospital caused by pregnancy-related pain or other acute urgent matters | ✅ | ✅ |
Medically necessary termination of pregnancy | ✅ | ✅ |
Pregnancy loss | ✅ | ✅ |
Premature delivery (before the 36th week of pregnancy) | ✅ | ✅ |
Pregnancy check ups | X | ✅ * |
Delivery | X | ✅ * |
Additional pre and post-natal midwife care | X | X |
* Indicates a 6 month waiting period on the policy
We therefore recommend our premium expat health policy if you are planning on becoming pregnant.
Please note: If you become pregnant after your premium expat health insurance policy commences, then the costs of routine prenatal examinations and childbirth will be covered after you have been on the plan for at least 6 months. Read more about that here.
What if i'm already pregnant?
If you are pregnant when you start your coverage, then routine prenatal visits and delivery are not covered.
However, on both the basic and premium expat health plans, there is coverage for unexpected medical issues and emergencies relating to your pregnancy that were not apparent before the start of coverage.
If you are already pregnant, then we recommend you opt for comprehensive public or private health insurance. To find out if you are eligible for public or private, you can use our digital recommendation tool.
