Does dental insurance cover orthodontics?

Orthodontic treatment that is recommended after the policy becomes active can be covered for those that sign up before turning 21. The coverage amount is limited in the first two calendar years, but expands after that:

  • 1st calendar year: €150

  • 2nd calendar year: €300 (combined)

  • 3rd calendar year: the limit then increases to €2000 Your combined total you can be reimbursed from then onwards is €2000, and does not continue to increase each year.

Please note that if the insured person has braces or other ongoing orthodontic treatment prior to coverage, then that is consider a pre-existing issue. In this case, maintenance of those braces or any related orthodontic work would not be supported.

For patients 21 and over, coverage will depend on the reason for treatment. If you want your teeth straightened for purely cosmetic reasons, dental insurance will likely not cover the costs. But if you have a medical reason for requesting treatment (e.g. movement of teeth following a car accident), then orthodontics may be partially or fully covered!

The above limits do not apply to treatment due to accidents that happen after the start of the insurance policy!
