Expat health insurance covers dental treatment differently depending on whether you have the Basic Cover plan or the Premium Cover plan. The Basic Cover plan covers up to €500 per policy year for pain-relieving restorative treatment, while the Premium Cover plan covers up to €1,000 and adds annual benefits for check-ups, cleanings, and dental replacements after a 6-month waiting period. Both plans cover only dental problems that begin after the policy starts, and a €25 deductible applies per insured event.

What dental treatments does expat health insurance cover?

Expat health insurance covers dental treatment differently depending on whether you have the Basic Cover plan or the Premium Cover plan. Both plans cover only dental problems that develop after your policy starts, and a €25 deductible applies per insured event.

  • The Basic Cover plan covers up to €500 per policy year for pain-relieving restorative dental treatment, plus repairs to existing dentures, crowns, implants, and orthodontic appliances.

  • The Premium Cover plan covers the same treatment up to €1,000 per policy year and adds separate annual benefits for check-ups, cleanings, and dental replacements after a 6-month waiting period.

What dental treatments does the Basic Cover plan cover?

The Basic Cover plan covers up to €500 per policy year for pain-relieving restorative dental treatment. Covered treatments include:

  • Tooth extractions

  • Medication such as antibiotics or pain relievers

  • Cavity treatment and simple fillings

  • Repairs to an existing denture, crown, implant, or orthodontic appliance, when a dentist prescribes or performs the treatment

Replacing an existing denture, crown, implant, or orthodontic appliance with a new one is not covered under the Basic Cover plan. Routine check-ups and cleanings are also not covered, and any dental issue identified during a check-up is not covered either, even if the resulting treatment would otherwise qualify. The Basic Cover plan does not provide dental benefits beyond these categories.

What additional dental coverage does the Premium Cover plan provide?

The Premium Cover plan covers up to €1,000 per policy year for the same pain-relieving restorative dental treatment as the Basic Cover plan. After you have held the Premium Cover plan for at least 6 months, the following benefits become available each policy year, separate from and in addition to the €1,000 restorative treatment allowance:

  • Up to €200 for dental check-ups

  • Up to €100 for preventative dentistry such as professional cleanings

  • Reimbursement for dental replacements at 80% of the invoice amount, up to €1,250 per policy year

What types of dental replacements (dentures) does the Premium Cover plan include?

The Premium Cover plan defines dental replacements, also called dentures, as pivot teeth, inlays, crowns, orthodontic treatment, functional analysis and functional therapeutic measures, and dental implants. These dental replacements are reimbursed at 80% of the invoice amount, up to €1,250 per policy year, and become available after the 6-month waiting period.

Does expat health insurance cover pre-existing dental issues?

Expat health insurance covers only new dental problems that arise after your policy becomes effective. Treatment for pre-existing dental issues is not covered under the Basic Cover plan or the Premium Cover plan.

Are night guards or retainers covered by expat health insurance?

Night guards and retainers are usually not covered, because the underlying dental issue is typically a long-standing, pre-existing condition. The Basic Cover and Premium Cover plans cover therapeutic aids only when they treat an injury from an accident. A night guard or retainer is therefore covered only when it relates to an accident, under the separate therapeutic-aids benefit, which is distinct from the plan's dental treatment coverage. The Basic Cover plan reimburses accident-related therapeutic aids up to €500 per policy year, while the Premium Cover plan reimburses them at 100%.
