All our private health insurance tariffs include some coverage abroad, but we generally recommend topping it up with travel health insurance

What are the advantages of getting travel health insurance on top of private?

  • If you’re on a private health plan with cashback and need medical care abroad, you can submit claims without impacting the cashback by submitting them on your travel health insurance policy. That way, you can still be eligible for the no-claim-in-a-year bonus.

  • No coverage limitation for outpatient and inpatient medical treatments

  • Repatriation in case of sickness

  • Burial or transport to home country in case of death

What is covered under travel health insurance?

Keep in mind that travel health insurance doesn’t constitute comprehensive health insurance, and can’t replace your private health coverage.

What is covered abroad under private health insurance?

If you are covered under a short-term plan (Standard or Premium), coverage abroad includes:

  • coverage in EU/EEA countries without time limitation

  • coverage for trips up to 12 weeks in any country where you have citizenship

  • coverage for trips up to 4 weeks in any other country

  • repatriation costs for trips up to 8 weeks (in case of sickness)

  • coverage is limited to the German table of fees for doctors. That means you are only covered up to what you’d be covered in Germany, and any difference needs to be paid out of pocket. In case of an accident or emergency, or with pre-approval, the coverage can be extended to match the fees or the country where the treatment is taking place

If you are covered under the Standard long-term plan:

  • coverage in EU/EEA countries without time limitation

  • coverage for trips up to 4 weeks in any other country

  • coverage is limited to the German table of fees for doctors. In case of an accident or emergency, or with pre-approval, the coverage can be extended to match the fees or the country where the treatment is taking place

If you are covered under the Plus long-term plan:

Same as in the Standard plan, but you are also covered for repatriation costs.

If you are covered under the Premium long-term plan:

  • coverage in EU/EEA countries without time limitation

  • coverage for trips up to 6 months in any other country

  • repatriation costs (in case of sickness)

  • burial or transport to home country in case of death

  • coverage is extended to match the fees of the country where the treatment is taking place
