How payment works for private health insurance (PKV)

When your private health insurance (PKV) contributions are due, how to pay them, and what happens if a payment is missed.

Written by Justina

Private health insurance (PKV) contributions are due monthly, with the first payment due once coverage is active. You can pay by direct debit, which we recommend, or by manual bank transfer with your policy number in the payment message. The bank account listed below is only for private health insurance payments. If you're employed in Germany, you pay the full contribution and your employer reimburses their share through your salary. Missed payments can lead to reduced or canceled coverage and late payment fees.

When is my private health insurance payment due?

The first private health insurance payment is due once your coverage is active. If your policy start date is in the past, the first payment becomes due once your coverage is confirmed. All payments after the first are due on the first day of each month.

What payment methods can I use for private health insurance?

You can pay your private health insurance contributions by direct debit or by manual bank transfer.

  • Direct debit is the method we recommend. You can set it up during your application or at any time later in your Feather account. If you have outstanding payments, you need to clear your balance before direct debit can be activated. We recommend using a European bank account, because accounts outside Europe can cause problems with the direct debit.

  • Manual bank transfer is also accepted. Send the payment to the bank account listed below and include your policy number in the payment message so the payment can be matched to your policy.

Cashback is available on the Standard, Plus, and Premium plans with no deductible. If your plan includes cashback, you only receive it for periods where direct debit is active, and cashback does not apply to periods paid by manual bank transfer.

How do I update my payment method for private health insurance?

You can update the bank details for your direct debit in your Feather account, on your policy page. Just head to your policy page and click "Change payment method".

For the new details to be used for the debit on the 1st of the following month, all outstanding payments need to be settled, and the update needs to be made by the 23rd of the current month. Updates made after the 23rd may only take effect from the month after that.

What are the bank details for a manual private health insurance payment?

Use these details for manual bank transfers of private health insurance contributions:

  • IBAN: DE24 6005 0101 0001 1144 45

  • BIC: SOLADEST600

  • Recipient: HALLESCHE KV

  • Message: Use for PKV, your 8-digit policy number, and your name

This bank account is only for German private health insurance (PKV) contributions arranged through us. For any other insurance, such as expat health insurance or dental insurance, check the billing page in your Feather account instead. You can contact our support team for more assistance or additional resources.

How does employer reimbursement work if I'm employed in Germany?

If you're employed in Germany, you pay the full monthly private health insurance contribution yourself. Your employer then reimburses their share, usually 50%, through your salary.

Since January 2026, your contribution details are reported directly to the tax office and shared with your employer, so you no longer need to hand your employer a separate letter.

What happens if a private health insurance payment is late or missed?

Late or missed private health insurance payments have the following consequences:

  • If the first payment isn't made within 2-4 weeks after the policy starts, your coverage is canceled, and a fee of €75 applies.

  • If payments after the first are repeatedly missed, your coverage can be reduced or canceled, depending on the situation.

  • Late payment fees apply when a payment is delayed. Please note that this fee is established and charged by our payment service provider and cannot be removed by Feather.

Where can I find invoices, payment reminders, and tax documents for private health insurance?

Private health insurance invoices and individual payment receipts are not shown in the billing history of your Feather account, and we do not issue separate receipts for these contributions.

If you use the Hallesche4U app, payment reminders and your tax certificate are available there. For tax purposes, your contributions are reported directly to the tax office automatically, as long as your tax ID and date of birth have been submitted.
