If changes in Germany's private insurance threshold for employees place you below the new limit, here are your options.
1. Stay on private health insurance
If you prefer to maintain private coverage, complete this public health insurance exemption form within three months of the threshold increase.
Once your exemption request is submitted, it will be sent to public insurance (TK) for processing. You should receive written confirmation via post within a few weeks. If you do not receive the letter within this timeframe, we recommend contacting TK directly. Please note that in some cases, TK may not see the exemption request due to processing delays. If this happens, we’re happy to send you the exemption request document directly so you can submit it again—just let us know!
Understanding the exemption form
While we believe retaining private health insurance is a secure choice, we aim for transparency regarding the effects of the exemption from public insurance.
If you choose the exemption, switching back to public insurance later may be challenging. The exemption is irrevocable and valid for your entire employment relationship, including new employment taken up immediately or with a short break in between. These short-term breaks are defined as periods of up to one month during which no other compulsory insurance coverage is in effect.
2. Switch to public health insurance
Your employer or new public health provider will contact you about the enrolment. If they haven't yet, you can also sign up yourself. You'll need to complete a form.
Once you're covered, ask your public health provider for an official confirmation of coverage that shows the start date.
Submit that letter when you cancel your private health insurance through your Feather account. You can do it until the end of March. Your private health insurance is not canceled automatically!
