Income threshold

To get private health insurance, you need to earn more than the required threshold. As of the 1st of January 2025, the income thresholds are:

  • €6,150 / month (€73,800/year): Employees in a German company

  • €2,500/ month (€30,000/ year): Employees under 45 in non-German companies, and freelancers under 51

  • €3,750/ month (€45,000/ year): Employees over 45 in non-German companies, and freelancers over 51

Employer contribution

If you are employed by a German company, your employer will contribute to the cost of your health and nursing care insurance, including that of your dependents (if applicable).

Your employer will cover half of the total cost, or up to a maximum contribution of €570 per month for both health and long-term nursing care insurance (as of 2025).

  • For private health insurance, the employers conribution is capped at €471 per month.

  • For long-term nursing care insurance the employers conribution is capped at €99 per month.
