Personal liability insurance and household contents insurance are two different types of insurance policies.
They may seem a bit similar, but are actually quite different and serve different purposes.
They're often bought together as they are complementary, and both are useful for unexpected events.
Personal liability insurance
This policy protects you from accidental damage you do to someone else or their property.
For example, if you accidentally spill red wine on your friend's white carpet, liability insurance would cover the costs of cleaning or replacing the carpet.
If you live in a rented apartment and accidentally cause damage to the floors, walls, doors or any furniture provided by the landlord, this would also be covered.
Liability insurance doesn't cover damages to your own belongings, mold growth or glass in your rented apartment.
Household contents insurance
On the other hand household contents insurance, protects your personal belongings against specific events, such as fire, burglary, robbery, vandalism tap-water damage, storm and hail, these are called insured events.
The policy covers your furniture, electronics, clothing, jewellery, and other personal items that serve your household, it does also include coverage for the furniture provided by your landlord.
For example, if there's a burglary and your laptop and your landlord's coffee machine are stolen, your household contents insurance would cover the cost of replacing those.
Household contents insurance doesn't cover damage to the fixed components of the building, non-insured events or accidental damage you do.
Both policies have worldwide coverage, so wherever you are with both policies you and your belongings are covered.
