What are valid reasons for canceling my expat insurance policy?

Let's detail the valid reasons for canceling, as well as how to how to complete frequently asked policy adjustments requests

There can be a range of reasons why you might need to cancel your expat health insurance. When requesting a cancellation, it is sometimes not obvious which cancellation reason to choose in order to have your cancellation processed.

Below we will go through some common cancellation reasons, and how you should request when you're needing to cancel your policy.

First, let's start with the most common, valid reasons to cancel your policy:

1) You have a new German health insurance

If you obtain another health insurance in Germany (whether its expat, public or private), you can cancel your current expat policy by selecting the cancellation option 'I have another health insurance'

2) You left Germany

If you are leaving or have already left Germany, then you can simply cancel your insurance by selecting 'I left Germany'

Now let's get on to some of the other reasons you might want to cancel, and how to proceed with these cancellation requests:

1) Pausing your coverage

We do not offer an option to pause expat policies. If you are leaving Germany for a period of time, you can simply cancel the policy and repurchase it when you return. For this cancellation reason, please select 'I left Germany'

2) Changing the start date

In order to change the start date, first sign up for a new policy with the correct start date. Following, please go to your old policy in your account and select cancel with the reason 'I have another health insurance'. If your old policy didn't start yet, you will automatically receive a full refund.

3) You were added as a dependent on a family member's health insurance

If you are a dependent or have been added to another family members health insurance, then please cancel with the reason 'I have another health insurance'

4) Don't want or need expat insurance

If our expat insurance is not right for you, that is absolutely fine, however please note that by law, you are required to have health insurance in Germany at all times, so you will need to find another health insurance first before you can cancel your current policy. Once you have a new health insurance policy, then you can cancel your expat policy by selecting 'I have another health insurance'

5) You haven't entered Germany

If didn't end up coming to Germany and would like to cancel your policy, then please contact us and provide proof of not being in Germany such as a screenshot of your geolocation. You can reach out to us here.

Please note: you will have to let us know before your policy starts, otherwise a one month minimum on the policy applies.

6) Your visa was rejected

If your visa was rejected and you haven't entered Germany, then please contact us and provide proof of visa rejection or proof of not being in Germany (such as a screenshot of your geolocation). You can reach out to us here.

7) Upgrading or downgrading your expat policy

Firstly, please purchase a new policy with your preferred tariff type. Please then reach out to us and let us know. We will then cancel your old policy and ensure there is no gap or overlap in insurance coverage.
