What is gap coverage and how does it work when switching to Feather?

Gap coverage is a safety feature that protects you during the switch from one legal insurance provider to another. It ensures you’re still covered for legal issues—even if your old provider doesn’t include them—as long as you’ve signed up with Feather before your current policy ends.

Here’s how it works:

• If you already have an active legal insurance policy with another provider

• You sign up for Feather before that policy ends

• And there's no break in coverage between the two policies

...then gap coverage automatically applies.

During the overlap, your old insurer is still responsible for any claims they would normally cover. But if a situation comes up that your old policy excludes (and your Feather plan includes), then Feather can step in to help, up to the limits of your new policy.

Once your old policy officially ends, your Feather plan becomes your full, standalone legal insurance.

To switch smoothly without losing coverage:

• Cancel your current legal insurance by contacting your existing insurer.

• Note the exact cancellation date (the last day of your old coverage).

• Set this same date as the start date for your Feather policy when signing up.

That way, there’s no gap between policies, and you’re protected the entire time.

What should I do if I have a legal claim during the overlap of both policies?

If something comes up while both policies are still active:

  • You’ll need to contact your old insurer first.

  • If they reject the claim or only partially cover it, you can then reach out to Feather to see if it’s covered under your new plan.

Do waiting periods transfer to my Feather legal insurance policy?

Most legal insurance policies in Germany include a waiting period (often three or six months). If you already had legal insurance before switching to Feather and there’s no gap between the two policies, your waiting period may be waived. But only for the areas of law that were already covered under your previous policy.

That means:

  • If your old policy included, for example, employment law, then you won’t need to re-serve the waiting period with Feather for employment-related issues.

  • If your old policy did not include a certain area (such as employment, tenancy, traffic), then the standard waiting period for that area will apply when you join Feather.
