Expat health insurance covers pregnancy-related care, and what is included depends on the plan. Both expat plans (Basic Cover and Premium Cover) cover acute and urgent pregnancy situations, such as pregnancy-related pain, medically necessary termination, pregnancy loss, and premature delivery before the 36th week. Only Premium Cover covers routine pregnancy check-ups and delivery, and only after a six-month waiting period. If a pregnancy already exists when the policy starts, routine prenatal care and delivery are not covered.

What pregnancy care does expat health insurance cover?

Expat health insurance covers some pregnancy-related care, and what is included depends on the plan. Coverage works as follows:

  • Covered by both expat plans (Basic Cover and Premium Cover): doctor or hospital visits for pregnancy-related pain or other acute, urgent matters; medically necessary termination of pregnancy; pregnancy loss; and premature delivery before the 36th week of pregnancy.

  • Covered by Premium Cover only, after a six-month waiting period: routine pregnancy check-ups and delivery.

What pregnancy care is not covered by expat health insurance?

Some pregnancy-related care is not covered by expat health insurance, and what is excluded depends on the plan:

  • Additional pre- and post-natal midwife care is not covered on either expat plan (Basic Cover or Premium Cover).

  • Routine pregnancy check-ups and delivery are not covered on Basic Cover at all. On Premium Cover, they are not covered during the first six months of the policy (the waiting period).

  • If a pregnancy already exists when the policy starts, routine prenatal care and delivery are not covered on either expat plan.

Is pregnancy covered if I am already pregnant when my expat health policy starts?

If a pregnancy already exists when the policy starts, routine prenatal visits and delivery are not covered. Both expat plans (Basic Cover and Premium Cover) still cover unexpected medical issues or emergencies related to the pregnancy that arise after coverage begins.

What are my options if I am already pregnant and need routine prenatal care and delivery?

If you are already pregnant and need routine prenatal care and childbirth covered, comprehensive public health insurance (GKV) or private health insurance (PKV) is a better fit, because expat health insurance does not cover routine prenatal care or delivery for an existing pregnancy. You can use our digital recommendation tool at https://app.feather-insurance.com/recommendation-tool/health to check whether you are eligible for public health insurance (GKV) or private health insurance (PKV).

What is the waiting period for pregnancy check-ups and delivery on expat health, Premium Cover?

Expat health, Premium Cover applies a six-month waiting period before routine pregnancy check-ups and delivery are covered, and only when the pregnancy begins after the policy starts. Acute and urgent pregnancy situations are covered from the start of the policy on both expat plans.
