As expat health insurance is considered insurance for accidents, emergencies and new illnesses with symptoms, gynaecological coverage is limited to certain situations.

Gynaecology (and other medical specialist care) is included in the scope of coverage, so long as it is related to a new medical issue that first started after the coverage start date and not related to a pre-existing issue or part of a routine check up/preventative care.

So, let’s further break down two separate scenarios in which gynaecological coverage is and isn’t covered under expat health insurance.

It’s time for my pap smear, is this covered?

No, as this is considered a proactive checkup and there are no symptoms, this does not fall in the scope of coverage.

I’m having a new issue/symptom that I consider abnormal, is this covered?

As this is a reactive check and the initial cause of seeking medical attention was a symptom/complaint, coverage is likely.

Advice on submitting a claim or obtaining prior approval - as with any claim, we will need to check if it is a new condition and meets the scope of coverage. We recommend providing us with medical information on the illness, the onset of the complaint, the acute indication for surgical treatment.
