Changing private health insurance plans does not reset the accumulated no-claim bonus years or dental treatment limits. However, upgrading or downgrading a long-term plan restarts the two-year minimum contract term, while short-term plans can be canceled monthly without affecting contract terms.
How does switching private health insurance plans affect my no-claim bonus?
If you have a long-term plan, you qualify for a no-claim bonus when you have no claims submitted for a full calendar year, were covered for all 12 months of that year, and still have coverage when the cashback is paid out between May and June of the following year. If you change plans during the year, your no-claim bonus is still calculated based on your previous premium. The count of claim-free years does not reset when you switch plans, all accumulated claim-free years are preserved.

Will my dental treatment limit be impacted when I change plans?
The yearly dental treatment limit varies by plan. When you switch to a different private health insurance plan, the dental treatment limit corresponds to the number of years you have been insured, and it does not reset. For example, if you have been insured for 3 years and switch plans, you apply the 3rd-year dental treatment limit of the new plan.
How does changing plans impact the minimum contract term?
Long-term plans
All of our long-term plans have a minimum term of 2 years before you can cancel and switch to a different German provider.
When upgrading or downgrading, this period restarts. The minimum term of 2 years will apply again from the date the new plan comes into effect.
This doesn’t apply if you are moving out of Germany. In that case, you can cancel at any time.
Short-term plans
All short-term plans can be canceled monthly. Switching between short-term plans has no consequence on the contract terms.
