Private health insurance

The monthly price remains the same. You pay the full monthly price from the start of the parental leave - even if you are employed.

Public health insurance

  • Voluntarily insured (self-employed or employed and earn over the threshold)

If your spouse continues to work and also has public health insurance, you can join their insurance for free.

Otherwise, you'll need to pay for your public health insurance. The minimum price is around €200 per month. The price may be higher if you have any additional income during parental leave, such as rent, capital assets, or spousal support from a divorced spouse.

  • Mandatorily insured (teachers, artists, and employees earning less than the threshold)

You'll be covered for free during maternity and parental leave. Beware that you'll need to pay, however, if you take up a part-time job paying more than €556 per month.
