How to cancel a legal insurance policy and how the notice period works

An overview of how to cancel a legal insurance policy, including the required notice period, how the timing of your request affects your premium, and how the rules differ depending on when your policy started.

The cancellation rules for a legal insurance policy depend on when the policy started. In all cases you give written notice, and the cancellation takes effect at the end of a defined notice period, most often the end of the following month. For policies that started before November 1, 2023, whether you submit your request before or after your monthly renewal date determines whether you pay an extra full month or a prorated amount. You can find your policy start date in your account, and that date determines which set of rules applies to you.

How do I cancel my legal insurance policy, and how much notice do I need to give?

The notice period and end date depend on when your legal insurance policy started.

  • For policies that started on or before April 16, 2026, there is a minimum contract period of 1 year. To end the policy after this first year, you must request cancellation at least 3 months before your annual anniversary date. Once the first year has passed, you can cancel at any time with 1 month's notice, and your policy ends on the last day of the following month.

  • For policies that started between November 1, 2023, and April 16, 2026, the policy ends on the last day of the month following the month in which you request cancellation. For example, if you started a policy on November 15, 2024, and requested cancellation on November 11, 2025, the policy ends on December 31, 2025.

  • For policies that started before November 1, 2023, you must give a full 1 month's notice based on your policy start date rather than your monthly billing date. Canceling before your monthly renewal date avoids an extra full month's premium, while canceling after that date results in 1 additional full month's premium plus a prorated amount for the remaining days.

How is my final premium calculated when I cancel a legal insurance policy that started before November 1, 2023?

For these policies, the final charge depends on whether you submit your cancellation before or after your monthly renewal date.

  • If you give 1 month's notice before your monthly renewal date, you are not charged for an extra full month. For example, if your policy started on October 19 and you cancel on January 11, the policy ends on February 19, and a prorated amount is calculated for the remaining days from February 1 to February 19.

  • If you submit your cancellation after your monthly renewal date, you are charged for 1 additional full month as the notice period. For example, if your policy started on October 19 and you cancel on January 20, you pay for February in full.
