How private health prices and employer contributions are calculated

Each private health insurer has its pricing system. The monthly cost depends on:

  • The plan you choose

  • Your age when you join

  • Your health at the time of application

That means you’ll pay less if you’re younger and in good health when you sign up. Once you're insured, your premium won’t go up just because you get older or develop new health conditions.

What your German employer contributes

Your employer will pay up to 50% of your monthly price—not just for you, but also for a non-working spouse or children you cover under private insurance. There’s a cap, though. In 2025, the maximum employer contribution is €570 per month. As long as this amount isn't exhausted, your employer also contributes to 2 add-ons:

  • Nursing care insurance (Pflegepflichtversicherung)

  • Sick pay coverage

In contrast, a travel insurance add-on isn't eligible for employer contributions.
