What is the SVNR?
The social security number (Sozialversicherungsnummer or SVNR) is the German pension number that tracks an individual's pension contributions. This number is unique and remains with you for life. If you work in Germany, you need this number to start your job. Your employer will ask for it before they can officially hire you.
How do I get a SVNR and how long does it take?
If you have private or expat health insurance, you or your employer must request your SVNR from the German pension office. Once requested, the pension office will send the SVNR to your address. The processing and delivery can take up to 4 weeks.
