Private health insurance

The monthly premium for private health insurance remains the same during maternity and parental leave. You are required to pay the full monthly premium even if you are not working during this time.

Public health insurance

  • If you are voluntarily insured under public health insurance, such as self-employed individuals or employees earning above the income threshold, the following applies:

    • If your spouse continues to work and also has public health insurance, you can join their insurance for free.

    • If you are not eligible to join your spouse's insurance, you must pay for your public health insurance yourself. The minimum monthly premium is approximately €200. The premium may be higher if you receive additional income during parental leave, including rental income, asset income, or spousal support from a divorced spouse.

  • If you are mandatorily insured under public health insurance, such as employees earning below the income threshold

You'll be covered for free during maternity and parental leave. However, if you take a part-time job earning more than €556 per month, you must start paying health insurance premiums again.
