In the changing world of healthcare, Germany is getting ready for a digital future that includes important services like electronic patient records, e-prescriptions, and an implant registry. To access these services, you'll need a Krankenversichertennummer (KVNR).

What is the Krankenversichertennummer (KVNR)?

The KVNR is distinct from your current health insurance number and is issued by a statutory body. It builds upon your Rentenversicherungsnummer (pension insurance number) and is crucial for reporting implants to the upcoming implant registry.

Do I have a KVNR already?

You might already have a KVNR, but it depends on your previous health insurance in Germany:

Public health insurance

If you've had public health insurance in Germany before, you already have a KVNR assigned to you. This 10-digit number can be found on your public health insurance card, however, since it's assigned to you internally, you do not need to store it.

Private health insurance

If you were privately insured before and requested for one, it has been assigned to you and you do not need to request it again.

Our FAQs

Why do I need a Krankenversichertennummer?

The KVNR is a lifelong identifier, essential for allocation within the Telematics Infrastructure (TI), Germany's digital health platform. This helps access services like the electronic patient record, e-prescriptions, and a cardless digital identity. Additionally, a KVNR is mandatory for reporting to the Implant Registry, set to launch on January 1, 2024.

What if I don't apply for a Krankenversichertennummer?

Delaying KVNR application, especially during unplanned implantations, can cause significant setbacks as the KVNR is necessary for implant reporting. Without a KVNR, you'll also miss out on access to electronic services like patient records and e-prescriptions.

How do I get my Krankenversichertennummer?

You will be provided your KVNR when needed for digital services such as the electronic patient record or the Implant Registry.

Why do you need my Rentenversicherungsnummer?

This is a bureaucratic necessity unrelated to your pension. The KVNR issuing authority (ITSG) requires your pension insurance number to create your KVNR. It will be obtained directly from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung, and the ITSG then generates your KVNR based on this information.
