What is the KVNR, and why is it important?
The Krankenversichertennummer (KVNR) is a unique 10-digit health insurance ID used throughout Germany for life. It is issued by an official authority and is based on the individual’s pension insurance number. The KVNR is necessary to use digital health services such as electronic patient records, electronic prescriptions, and the implant registry. Without this number, you cannot use these services, and your care may be delayed.
Who already has a KVNR?
You might already have a KVNR in the following cases:
You had public health insurance in Germany before. You can find it on your old public health insurance card.
You requested it from your previous German private health insurer.
How can I obtain a KVNR if I do not have one?
You’ll automatically receive your KVNR the first time you use a digital health service in Germany.
The authority (ITSG) will generate it using your pension insurance number.
If you don’t have a KVNR or aren’t sure, you can request it after signing up for private health insurance.
