What is the KVNR and why do you need it?

The Krankenversichertennummer (KVNR) is your lifelong, 10-digit health insurance ID in Germany. It’s assigned by a statutory body and based on your Rentenversicherungsnummer (pension insurance number).

You need a KVNR to access digital health services such as electronic patient records, e-prescriptions, and the implant registry. Without one, you cannot use these services and your care may be delayed.

Who already has one?

You might already have a KVNR in the following cases:

  • You had public health insurance in Germany before. You can find it on your old public health insurance card.

  • You requested it from your previous german private health insurer.

How do you get it?

  • You’ll automatically receive your KVNR the first time you use a digital health service in Germany.

  • The authority (ITSG) will generate it using your pension insurance number.

If you don’t have a KVNR or aren’t sure, you can request one now by clicking the button below.
