What is the general coverage limit for liability insurance?
Our liability insurance policy covers accidental bodily injury or property damage caused to others up to a maximum of 50 million EUR.
Are there specific situations where liability coverage limits are lower?
Yes, some situations have lower coverage limits than the general maximum:
Misfuelling a rented or borrowed car is covered up to 20,000 EUR.
Accidental damage to school teaching equipment for full-time students is covered up to 5,000 EUR per item, with a maximum of 10,000 EUR per insurance event each year.
Damage caused during loading or unloading a car or trailer is covered up to 20,000 EUR. This excludes damage to the car you own or operate or to other vehicles.
Legal protection for liability claims, such as court costs if you are sued, is covered up to 150,000 EUR.
How is the value of damaged items determined for compensation?
Liability insurance pays compensation based on the current value of the damaged item according to the Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch (German Civil Code). For example, if you damage a friend's camera, the reimbursement is the camera's value at the time of damage, not a replacement brand new camera.
When can replacement value (purchase price) be compensated instead of current value?
Replacement value may be compensated if the original purchase price of the item was 5,000 EUR or less and the item was purchased within the past 12 months. However, this does not apply to mobile devices, computers, laptops, cameras, MP3 players, or eyeglasses.
