Signing up for expat health insurance does not automatically generate a Sozialversicherungsnummer (SVNR). We do not handle SVNR requests and have no visibility into the application process, as the Deutsche Rentenversicherung manages this entirely. Depending on your situation (whether you're starting employment, job seeking, or working as a freelancer or student), different steps apply to obtain your SVNR.

If you're a job seeker, you typically do not need to apply for an SVNR separately. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung issues one automatically when you secure employment and enroll in public health insurance for the first time.

If you need an SVNR but do not qualify for statutory insurance (which may notably apply to freelancers or working students) you can request one by visiting your local pension office in person, or by submitting a request by post using our online form. While we provide the online form as a convenience, the application is submitted directly to and processed entirely by the Deutsche Rentenversicherung.
