Germany has a multi-payer healthcare system that operates in two tiers: publicly funded statutory health insurance and private insurance. The former is made up of more than 110 Krankenkassen, or "sickness funds", which are partially funded by the government. The latter is the private healthcare network, which takes no government funding.
