Germany has a multi-payer healthcare system that operates in two tiers: publicly funded statutory health insurance and private health insurance. The public tier is made up of around 100 Krankenkassen, or "sickness funds," which are partially funded by the government. The latter is the private healthcare network, which receives no government funding.
