Can I add dependents to my public health insurance policy?

Who is eligible for family insurance in public health?

One major benefit of the public health insurance scheme is that it allows for free coverage of dependents if certain conditions are met.

Who can be covered under my policy?

  • Spouse or your civil partner under the Civil Partnership Act

  • Biological and adopted children, up to a certain age limit

  • Children of family-insured children

  • Stepchildren and grandchildren living in the household

  • Foster children, provided they are not being cared for professionally

Children can be dependents on family insurance:

  • Until their 18th birthday

  • If they are not yet employed, by their 23rd birthday

  • Or until their 25th birthday if they still go to school, do vocational training without pay, study, or do a voluntary social or ecological year or a youth voluntary service abroad without pay

A spouse/civil partner or child can be a dependent as long as their income (earnings, rent, pension, or other) is under €535 per month or if they have a mini-job with an income of up to €556 per month. Once their income passes that threshold, they have to get their own policy. They cannot be insured as dependents if they are full-time self-employed.

How exactly do I add them to my public insurance policy?

First you need to sign up for public health insurance yourself. Once you sign up through Feather, you will receive an email from us with all the instructions on adding your dependents to your policy.
Exception—If you sign up for AOK, they will reach out directly to you once they confirm your policy, and send you all the instructions.
