Insurance status confirmation (M10) for enrolling at a German university

How to get the M10 insurance status report your German university needs to enroll you — whether you have public health insurance (GKV) through us, keep your home-country insurance, or hold expat health insurance and need an exemption.

The M10 is the insurance status report a public health insurance provider sends to your university to confirm whether you are subject to or exempt from public health insurance (GKV). Since January 2022 it is exchanged electronically through the student notification procedure (SMV). If you take out public health insurance through us, it is sent automatically; if you keep your home-country insurance or hold expat health insurance, you must contact a public health insurance provider directly to have your status reported.

What is the M10 insurance status report, and why does my university need it?

Everyone living in Germany must have health insurance, and proof of it is required to enroll at a German university. The M10 is the insurance status report that a public health insurance provider sends to your university, confirming whether you are subject to mandatory public health insurance (GKV) or exempt from it. Since January 1, 2022, under §199a SGB V, this report is exchanged electronically between universities and public health insurance providers through the student notification procedure (Studentisches Meldeverfahren, SMV), which replaced the earlier paper process. Your university needs the M10 before it can issue your enrollment certificate.

How is my insurance status confirmed if I have public health insurance through you?

When you apply for public health insurance (GKV) through us, your public health insurance provider automatically confirms to your university that you are subject to mandatory insurance. This confirmation is sent as soon as you submit your application, so you do not need to take any further steps.

How do I confirm my insurance status if I want to keep my home-country insurance?

You can keep your home-country insurance only if you are from the EU/EEA, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, or Tunisia. Because we are not a public health insurance provider, you need to contact a public health insurance provider directly so they can confirm to your university that you already hold valid insurance. You can reach out to TK at [email protected] and send the following:

  • a photo of the front and back of your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), or an equivalent document from your home insurer

  • your full name, address, and date of birth

  • the name and address of your university in Germany

  • your start date of studies

  • optionally, a telephone number for any questions

TK should send the M10 to your university within about a week. This is not an exemption — it only validates your existing home-country insurance.

What happens if I start working or my home-country insurance ends during my studies?

If you take on a job, such as a mini job or a working-student role, or your home-country insurance ends at any point during your studies, you must switch to public health insurance (GKV) in Germany. You remain eligible for public health insurance (GKV) as a student, and your coverage starts either when your employment begins or when your home-country insurance ends.

How do I get exempted from public health insurance if I have expat health insurance?

If you have expat health insurance, you need to be exempted from public health insurance (GKV) before you can enroll. Because we are not a public health insurance provider, you need to contact a public health insurance provider directly so they can inform your university that you are exempt. You can reach out to TK at [email protected]. You can find the full process in our article on the insurance confirmation and exemption process for students with expat health insurance.
